Payroll Specialist I | Full Time | Detroit, MI
DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs various payroll functions including on-line view and edits, assist with paycheck preparation and special check requests, process garnishments and other clerical duties as assigned. Performs tasks to establish and maintain employee/payroll records. Duties include checking and auditing timekeeping records for compliance with established standards, maintaining time and attendance records and posting miscellaneous changes into the system. Responds to basic employee inquiries.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains garnishment activity for payroll, including mailing of required documents and payments.
- Ensures confidential information is handled securely and maintained according to company guidelines in a confidential manner and with discretion.
- Able to meet deadlines, work under pressure and available for overtime as needed.
- Receives sorts, date stamps, and distributes incoming mail.
- Works collaboratively with Payroll Assistant II and department leadership, providing administrative duties as assigned.
- Directly handle or triage employee requests to senior team members.
- Is involved in testing of payroll updates and enhancements.
- Demonstrates the ability to master and apply new information technology tools to assigned work; Word, PeopleSoft software, PowerPoint, Excel.
- Generates regularly scheduled reports of key Payroll metrics.
- Assists in the development of department goals.
- Perform other special projects as assigned.
- Responsible for the uninterrupted flow of the Payroll department, including but not limited to the maintenance of all equipment, ordering of all supplies, local recording keeping, etc. as required.
- Other duties as assigned to maintain effective customer service and workflow.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- One (1) year of payroll experience preferred.
- Strong technical and PC proficiency (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent organization skills required.
