Director, Spiritual Care
Job Summary:
The Director of Spiritual Care will lead and unify spiritual care services across Henry Ford Health’s 12 hospitals. This leader directs the development and implementation of a continuum of spiritual care services for patients, families and associates.
This system-wide role has been established to ensure consistent, timely, and comprehensive spiritual support for patients, families, and staff, regardless of location or circumstance. The Director will be responsible for managing a diverse team of spiritual care professionals, including full-time, part-time, and contingent chaplains, while building a collaborative and responsive spiritual care model that serves all faith traditions.
Responsibilities:
· Aligns services and programs to the organizations mission, goals and strategic initiatives, as well as the needs of those served and with the standards of practice for the profession of spiritual care.
· Directs all activities related to staffing, including hiring, training, mentoring, evaluating, volunteer recruitment, and providing opportunities for continuing education and development.
· Plans, directs and collaborates with others in providing spiritual and emotional support, religious resources, sacramental services, and worship experiences for individuals and groups, as well as education on addressing diverse spiritual/religious/cultural needs, and assistance with biomedical ethical decision-making.
· Promotes spiritual care that fulfils the Ethical and Religious Directives.
· Ensures availability of spiritual support during all hours, especially during emergencies and high-stress situations.
· Supervises and supports approximately full-time and part-time/contingent chaplains from various faith traditions.
· Collaborates with ethics committees, palliative care, and end-of-life care teams to provide holistic, compassionate care.
· Acts as liaison with other religious leadership as needed.
· Works to ensure sacramental care delivery for the Catholic population.
· Develops and implements best practices for spiritual care delivery, staff support, and crisis response.
· Includes engagement around spirituality in the larger faith community in which the hospitals reside.
Complexity of Work:
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
· Preferred Credential(s):
o Chaplain
o Board certification through NACC preferred
Education:
· Master's degree in Divinity, Theology, Pastoral Studies or related field is required.
Work Experience:
· 3 years of experience required with 5 years of experience preferred
· 1 year of leadership or management experience preferred.
· Demonstrated knowledge of Catholic Ethical and Religious Directives and experience applying them in complex clinical environments consistent with ERD #22.
· Proven ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary spiritual care teams (e.g., Catholic priests, imams, rabbis, humanist chaplains).
· Strong background in end-of-life, palliative care, and crisis response spiritual support.
· Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
· Ability to travel regularly between system hospitals and participate in on-call coverage planning.
