The Vice President (VP) is the senior non-physician executive for the Henry Ford

Medical Group’s clinical operations and plays a key management role in the vertically integrated health care system. Reporting dually to the CEO – Henry Ford Medical Group and the COO and President – Health Care Operations, The VP will lead the execution of the HFMG long term growth and development plan and coordinate key physician strategic development to support physician integration and alignment. These strategies will both reflect the current mission of Henry Ford Health System while preparing the HFMG for a successful future in a changing healthcare environment. Additionally, the VP will work to maintain effective and responsive relationships with physicians, market leaders, VP of System Ambulatory Strategy & Operations and key executive leaders for the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations.



Strategy Responsibilities

  • Provide overall management and guidance to the regions/markets and collaborate on strategic direction for the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations.

  • Collaborate and review Departmental Chairs and administrators semiannually to review access, financial goals, quality metrics and growth strategies.

  • Develop strategic plans to address key issues identified by the HFMG Board of Governors.

  • Coordinate leadership and strategic decision making of the Henry Ford Medical Group clinical operations with HFHS senior leadership.

  • Ensure processes are in place to deliver cost efficient, high quality, and customer focused clinical care.  Reviews and recommends clinical design improvements including integration of digital based solutions. 

  • Ensure support of and alignment with the academic and research missions of the HFMG.


Finance Responsibilities

  • Maintain financial viability in the Medical Group’ clinical operations through growth strategies, cost management, and billing practices.

  • Oversee capital planning, allocation, and business plans to produce return on investment.

  • Ensure that all regulatory and compliance requirements are met in all of the HFMG clinical settings.

  • Manage finances including budgeting, control of salary, non-salary and capital investment expenses. Oversee the development of detailed fiscal and operational reporting.

  • Ensure that financial and operational targets are achieved for the Henry Ford

  • Medical Group’s clinical operations in alignment with Henry Ford Health System.

  • This position will have budgetary responsibility for the clinical departments and clinics within the ambulatory centers as well as operational management.  

  • Collaborates with Revenue Cycle to ensure professional fee billing operations supporting all billable providers who are part of HFHS’ clinical physician enterprise. Collaborate with Patient Financial Services to ensure excellent performance. 

  • Involvement in contracting and insurance requirements to maximize revenue.

  • Collaborate with the managed care division to develop successful physician contracts with clinical payor groups and ensure physician/payor credentialing is effectively performed. Work collaboratively with other System departments in the establishment of risk-based reimbursement programs for the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations.


Operational Responsibilities

  • For the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical and academic operations: 

  • Ensure consistent processes across markets through benchmarking, best practices, communication, and collaboration.

  • Ensure adequate resources are made available for clinical departments and regions to accomplish their goals

  • Develop operational plans to address key issues identified by the HFMG Board of Governors regarding the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations.

  • Oversee all HFMG clinical operations 

  • Collaborate with P.R. on Physician communications, marketing and with Human Resources regarding physician relations, 

  • Collaborates with HFMG Salary Management Committee compensation/rewards and retention programs 

  • Provide leadership in customer service improvement efforts for the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations.

  • Plan, develop, implement and sustain effective systems and programs that support the operational goals of the Henry Ford Medical Group.

  • Participate in recruitment of HFMG leaders and department Chairs during the interview process.


Talent Management Responsibilities

  • For the Henry Ford Medical Group’s clinical operations:

  • Provide for human resource development through training, performance management, and succession planning in collaboration with Human Resources.

  • Develop and oversee Physician recruitment and employment strategies in collaboration with Human Resources, physician manpower planning and annual physician growth forecasts.

  • In close collaboration with the Office of the General Counsel and Human Resources:

    • Oversee the administration of Physician employment contracts, compensation and incentives including, where necessary, the appropriate disclosure and involvement of the Compensation Committee of the Board of Trustees; 

    • Manage professional and clinical staff, including day-to-day supervision,

    • employee relations, and staff development; 

    • Attract, develop and retain employees who are quality-minded, achievement

    • oriented and committed to achieving the mission and values of the organization;

    • and Optimize the development, motivation and direction of all clinical staff toward

    • fulfillment of the overall vision. 

  • Lead development of new business opportunities. 

  • Make executive presentations on business proposals for clinical operations of the Henry Ford Medical Group.


  • Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration or related field. 

  • Ten (10) years management experience in health care with at least five (5) years in a senior role. 

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of leadership and/or executive experience leading a physician group practice (greater than 100 physicians) is essential. 

  • Demonstrate a strong track record of developing and maintaining collaborative relationships among diverse groups, including Board members, medical staff, as well as key external stakeholders. 

  • Previous experience with physician strategies including a history of successful collaboration with physicians and with Administrative peers. 

  • Proven success and experience with physician employment contracting and physician compensation plans in collaboration with Human Resources.  

  • The ability to create an environment of open communication and trust with physicians and hospital management. 

  • The ability to work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team at HFHS as well as with diverse constituents.  

  • Broad-based experience in all aspects of managing an organization, including finance; program, service or business development; communications and marketing; and patient relations. 

  • Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and abilities to represent HFHS effectively. 

  • Excellent planning, problem solving and time-management skills.  Experience in physician billing and compliance.

Normal office environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures.  Must be able to adapt to frequently changing work priorities and be able to prioritize and balance the requirements of working within and throughout various functions and entities in the organization to achieve ambulatory operational success.  Must be able to travel frequently to various HFHS sites and locations as needed
