At Henry Ford Jackson Hospice, volunteers are an essential part of the care team, providing comfort and support to patients and families at the end of life. From companionship and emotional support to assisting with household tasks and participating in grief support, our volunteers play a vital role in enhancing quality of life during this deeply personal time.
As the Volunteer Coordinator, you will oversee and support the compassionate individuals who serve in this impactful program. You’ll guide volunteers through our comprehensive and free training program, match them with roles aligned to their skills and passions, and ensure a meaningful experience for both the volunteers and the patients and families they serve.
You will also need to be a self-starter who works autonomously with minimal supervision, demonstrates excellent communication skills, and collaborates effectively with the interdisciplinary care team.
Opportunities for volunteers include:

Patient home visits – Providing companionship, emotional support, and help with light household tasks.

Hospice Home support – Greeting visitors at the reception desk or spending time with patients.

Administrative support – Assisting with mailings, phone calls, event preparation, and general office tasks.

Grief support – Supporting grief groups or offering outreach to families who have experienced loss.

GENRAL SUMMARY:
- Develops volunteer programming consistent with the mission of the agency and within financial parameters assigned.
- Works with other support staff and community contacts to recruit, train and allocate requested volunteer services
- Develops a systematic assessment of program for defining improvement opportunities, additional needs and outcomes.
- Maintains a safe and risk-free environment in the office and during community activities.
- Participates in agency and hospital-wide continuous quality improvement activities to improve performance and patient outcomes.
- Recognizes the importance of building partnerships with all members of the health care team and exhibits behavior that displays teamwork, professionalism, and respect for diversity.
- Demonstrates personal accountability for own continuous growth and development and seeks out appropriate learning opportunities to enhance competency and improve performance.
- Creates a caring experience for both internal and external customers, is courteous and respectful, anticipates and responds to customer needs, and gives high priority to customer satisfaction.
- Collaborates with supervisor to develop and implement policies, procedures, CQI activities, reporting, training, and education to ensure organization-wide compliance with legal, ethical, contractual, and/or regulatory standards (i.e., JCAHO, HCFA, OIG, Corporate Compliance, MIOSHA, etc.).
EDUCATION:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree
SKILLS:
- Experience in supervision of paid or volunteer staff
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License and dependable automobile, insured according to state requirements
