Sr VP/Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO)
The successful candidate for this role:
1. Must possess a Bachelor’s degree. A concentration is preferred in Human Resources Management, Business Management or a related field. A Master’s Degree in an HR-related field is preferred.
2. Must possess a minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible human resources management experience, including demonstrated effectiveness in a senior management role. Must also demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the contemporary role of Human Resources and a thorough understanding of its connection to strategies of the organization. Experience leading significant Human Resources functions at a large and complex organization highly desirable.
3. Must have broad experience and a record of proven success in working as part of a leadership team to achieve positive business outcomes, proactively leveraging Human Resources (e.g., performance improvement, change management, process redesign and strategic talent development and planning and management of processes associated with Board-level work, especially in the area of compensation and rewards). Understanding of the business operations implications of organizational development activities. Proven record of helping others create and develop high performing, productive work teams.
4. Experience in union and labor relations required.
5. Experience in the HR-related aspects of merger, acquisition or divestiture activity strongly preferred.
6. In-depth knowledge of and experience with Human Resources principles and practices including behavior theory, principles of organizational psychology, assessment methodologies, executive leadership development techniques and programs, performance management, process management/design, change management and organizational design.
7. Understanding of the complex and competitive environment of health care systems or proven success in a highly complex, multi-site environment preferred. Knowledge of health care issues such as current and future challenges of providing access to high quality care in an equitable manner to indigent, aged and minority populations. Demonstrated understanding of key issues such as the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, financing of health services, regulation, collaboration, competition, and the roles of government and the private sector regarding the organization and delivery of highly reliable care.
8. Adaptability, forward thinking and analytical ability to visualize, conceptualize and assimilate well in high pressure, unstructured, fast-paced, dynamic and multi-functional environments requiring creativity, innovation, foresight and mature professional judgment. Must be able to act quickly on new initiatives, anticipate opportunities, create new and better ways of doing business, provide a positive forward moving influence and quickly bounce back from set backs, frustrations or challenges with energy and commitment.
9. Exceptional leadership, management and facilitation skills. Demonstrated ability to skillfully counsel, collaborate and negotiate; inspire and build confidence in others; create alliances; obtain support and respect from diverse groups; and foster an understanding and commitment to both the business and the need for empathy in healthcare. Ability to adapt style and approach to match the needs of varying teams, individuals and situations. Extensive knowledge and experience leading and managing complex organizational change and performance improvement. Track record of attracting, selecting, developing, rewarding and retaining high caliber, diverse teams who achieve business goals.
10. Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated strong negotiation skills to present advisory, persuasive and authoritative recommendations to various constituents including sponsors, the Board of Directors, all levels of management, patients, medical staff, suppliers, employees and external agencies and groups. Union relations experience inside and/or outside of healthcare preferred.
11. Exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills that build strong teamwork and effective, collaborative and productive working relationships and partnerships. Ability to influence results and tactfully manage complex relationships and influences within and across the organization and to effectively represent the system to varied and diverse internal and external groups.
12. Track record of strong strategic decision making capability with proven ability to understand the inherent risks and the implications of decisions on all constituents. Advanced business and project management skills to lead strategic initiatives, identify business needs, provide effective solutions and manage needed resources to accomplish goals and objectives. Experience in having made significant contributions to creating and shaping a company’s overall business strategy.
13. Orientation to quality and high-reliability including a history of identifying key priorities, challenges and problems, obtaining relevant information, identifying root causes and generating contemporary alternative solutions to reach sound management decisions.
14. Ability to understand and use technology to create and sustain competitive advantage including using technology to move talent and organizational imperatives forward and aligning people and resource investment decisions with business technology to increase value.
