GENERAL SUMMARY:

Senior Bioscientific Staff position with a dual reporting relationship to the department Chair and the Vice Chair of Pathology.  Conducts research and development of molecular biology techniques for application to pathology.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Reporting to the Chair and Vice Chair of Pathology, conducts research and development of pathology related molecular tests.

2.      Evaluates molecular test kits, equipment, and methods to recommend those techniques which have the greatest potential for clinical and anatomic pathology.

3.      Prepares documentation of standard operating procedures and technical specifications.

4.      Maintains oversight of clinical molecular testing activities that may result from research and development efforts.

5.      Maintains responsibility for staff, supplies, equipment, and related budget. 

6.      Prepares clinical (non-research) testing areas, in an inspection ready mode to meet all accrediting agency requirements.

7.      Conducts research which results in data for publication.  Prepares scientific abstracts and manuscripts.

8.      Shares expertise by participating in molecular pathology lectures to Pathology staff and housestaff.

9.      May present original scientific data at national meetings.

10.    Other related duties as assigned.

 

Data Analysis:

Participate in clinical case data analysis and interpretation of genomic test results under direction of physician laboratory directors.

Interact with physicians and scientists in other departments as needed to guide development, implementation and interpretation of genomic test services.

 Review patient medical history to determine eligibility for genetic testing.

Review test orders for appropriate test utilization, CPT coding, and selection of referral laboratories.

Perform review and interpretation of genomic data from high complexity genomic techniques including next generation sequencing (NGS) and arrays.

Write patient reports under direct supervision of a board-certified geneticist for review by oncology and pathology clients.

  

Development and Maintenance:

Assist with establishing and maintaining internal genomic variant database to be used as the active knowledgebase for variant interpretation.

 Assist with updating variant curation strategies, variant scoring process, interpretation process, and reporting process on an ongoing basis.

 Develop expertise in interpreting genetic data from open source and proprietary analysis software and databases.

 Assist with establishing and documenting standard protocols for data analysis, interpretation and reporting of genetic test results.       

 

Scholarly Activities:

Perform extensive literature review and participate in interdepartmental journal clubs for ongoing education.

Present data at Molecular Pathology case review meetings, client meetings and conferences, when required.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s Degree in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related discipline, or equivalent education and experience, AND two to three years of related work experience.

 An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.

 Desired:

Ph.D. in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry or related discipline.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  1. PhD degree with experience in molecular techniques required.
  2. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills required.
  3. Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software required.
