The Director of Financial Planning & Analysis has oversight of long-range financial planning, operating budgeting and forecasting, and monitoring and reporting out on departmental operational performance against budget. Key deliverables include the annual financial plan, rolling forecasts, long range plans, operating and capital budgets and benchmarking.


The Director, FPA will have significant experience in establishing strong business and financial planning processes, budgeting, driving critical financial decisions, assessing model changes and delivering timely financial and management reporting.


This role reports to the VP Finance and serves as the leader in the development of annual budgets, financial forecasting and financial impact of strategic initiatives. Performs financial and statistical analyses of budgets to make sound conclusions, recommendations and forecast models.


  • Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of Henry Ford Health System in leadership behaviors, practices, and decisions.

  • Responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of the financial plan, including the long-range forecast, both on a GAAP and Statutory basis, rolling forecast as well as the annual operating and capital budget in conjunction with a cross-functional team of assumption owners.

  • Reviews, prepares, analyzes and presents reports and recommendations to senior leadership regarding operations, strategic initiatives and/or other applicable areas of interest in order to provide concise and accurate information that aids in decision-making.

  • Provide leadership and subject matter expertise regarding Axiom, including training of users and education to all stakeholders.

  • Provides strong leadership skills, including demonstrated skills in team building and development, both direct reports and broader financial team. This should incorporate leveraging formal and informal coaching and mentoring to identify future finance leaders.

  • Understands and promotes continuous quality improvement through process redesign and re-engineering, applying principles to key processes within FPA.

  • Models behaviors that support continuous learning and empowerment through team leadership.

  • Directs the development of critical financial data to support performance improvement initiatives. Utilizes internal analytics and benchmark comparisons to highlight potential cost savings opportunities within the organization.

  • Promotes a culture of high reliability to ensure that internal and external customer needs are recognized and addressed.

  • Lead the annual activities related to the revenue, medical and administrative components of the budget and forecast.

  • Conduct research necessary to prepare forecasts of future financial/business conditions using multiple scenarios and trends within the health care industry.

  • Develop and prepare annual financial forecast and ongoing forecasting updates for three/five-year financial planning.

  • Review current admin allocation within HAP and subsidiaries (HPI, ASR and Midwest Health Plan).  Make recommendations for improvement and efficiency including the appropriate capture of costs by product line.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of how new regulations may impact the business financially.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Required and Preferred:

CPA and/or Master’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field, preferred. 


Ten (10) years’ work experience in accounting/finance experience specifically in financial analysis, cost accounting, budget and forecasting, required.

Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience, required.


Experience collaborating with the business leaders to inform the financial planning process.
