  • Under the direction of leadership personnel; works in a self-directed manner to install, test, document, and maintain assigned laboratory information systems within specified boundaries according to established protocols; makes formal written and oral presentations on projects in compliance with established project methodology; and interacts with laboratories and laboratory systems customers. Has broad knowledge and understanding of laboratory systems and applications and has lead responsibility for operations and support of all laboratory systems and applications teams within Pathology Informatics. Handles review of systems and technical requests, escalated issues, and systems upgrades. Oversees the work of other analysts within Pathology Informatics under the direction of the Director Pathology Informatics. 
  • Meets with clients and/or managerial personnel in order to determine and define specific systems’ information requirements and objectives for laboratory systems requests for a team within Pathology Informatics.
  • Works with laboratory leaders and requestors to determine project scope and recommend best approach to accomplish objectives of project requests. Estimates project complexity, within their assigned responsibilities and areas of advanced expertise, and works with customers to determine impacts and timelines for requests. 
  • Determines causes and impacts of laboratory systems malfunctions and applications issues using appropriate analysis steps; analyzes the most complex issues escalated from all Pathology Informatics teams, specifically regarding systems operations, and ensures follow up and resolution. 
Project Management 
  • Involved in projects impacting laboratory systems or laboratory data with a very high degree of organizational scope, impact, and risk that may involve multiple systems within HFHS. Self directed as to project completion. 
  • Participates on project teams and completes assignments from project leaders, measures project progress, and reports the status of projects to client and project leaders. 
  • Leads project teams that include members from HFHS departments and IT representing different systems; creates the project scope and schedule, maintains project issues list, and reports project status to customers and leadership. 
  • Guides other analysts within Pathology Informatics in analyzing requests, planning, and managing projects; particularly systems operations and technical projects. 
Systems/Applications Development 
  • Designs and specifies laboratory systems and applications functionality using appropriate application tools  
  • Assures that applications design meets the needs across the user base of HFHS pathology, and defined standards. 
  • Defines application security and control procedures; maintaining regulatory compliance and security of information. 
  • Develops application test plans and evaluates and documents the results of testing according to defined standards. 
  • Oversight of LIS analysts regarding systems development and programming. Systems/Applications Implementation 
  • Develops plans for the implementation of laboratory systems applications and enhancements for pathology. 
  • Prepares, or oversees preparation, of all Pathology Informatics documentation with a focus on technical and operations documentation; procedures, training material, and Pathology Informatics work documents.
Systems/Applications Support 
  • On-call in a leadership role to resolved escalated issues; acts as a resource to other analysts in Pathology Informatics.
  • Has lead operations responsibility within Pathology Informatics to ensure that all systems and operations issues are resolved properly and in a timely manner. 
  • Has adequate knowledge and experience to support laboratory systems for HFHS pathology with proficiency and make decisions concerning the most difficult systems issues. 
  • Has advanced LIS expertise and assumes the lead role in supporting all HFHS laboratory systems and applications. In this lead role; acts as a resource to others to ensure proper follow up and resolution of issues, prepares Pathology Informatics procedures for applications support, and implements upgrades. 
Teamwork / Staff Oversight 
  • Oversees and coordinates the work of analysts within Pathology Informatics. Works collaboratively with team members and customers in Pathology; assists others relative their areas of expertise. 
  • Responsible for systems and applications training of analysts in Pathology Informatics with a focus on systems operations and technical topics. Personal Development 
  • Active member of professional groups, information systems user groups, and special interest groups; shares knowledge gained with team members. Represents HFHS on a minimum of one vendor Special Interest Group. 
  • Aware of current applicable laboratory and healthcare regulations and implements compliant systems.

  • Completion of an accredited bachelor’s degree program in: chemical, physical, or biologic science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or information systems. 
  • 10 years progressive experience supporting laboratory information systems applications and operations. 
  • Microsoft Office applications proficiency; Excel and Access required 
  • High level of analytical ability to gather and interpret data to: design systems and applications, and resolve systems issues. 
  • Planning skills to manage personal workload in a self-directed work environment and to complete assignments, projects, and issue resolution within appropriate timeframes, 
  • Organizational skills to coordinate projects within the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and to direct the work of a project team of employees and/or vendors. 
  • Interpersonal skills to be able to collaborate with information systems clients and colleagues throughout HFHS to determine needs, define objectives, gain acceptance of the system throughout the shared user community, and assist in implementation of systems and applications.
  • Written and oral communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and accurately with customers and team.

  • Certification from a recognized national agency such as ASCP, ASM, ACS, HEW, or NCA 
  • Advanced education or degree in information systems or business 
  • Programming skills, database management, and/or information systems development tools experience. 
  • Project management experience or application expertise 
  • Typically works in a normal office environment with frequent visits to clinical and anatomic pathology laboratories. 
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and transportation to travel to locations throughout HFHS as needed Working hours will vary based on projects, support needs, and on-call responsibilities
