Under general supervision of the Coordinator/Manager / Director cleans, inspects, assembles, packages disinfects / sterilizes all surgical products used to support physicians and surgical team in the inpatient, outpatient departments, Operating room, Emergency Room, Delivery Room and satellites. Documents and monitors all sterilization processes in assigned areas including but not limited to: steam, ETOH, Sterrad and high level disinfectants. Ensures all monitoring methods are compliant with the standards. Supplies the needs of various departments requiring the services of the department by properly meeting and anticipating the instrumentation needs for pending cases for assembly of procedure specific case carts needs. Receives, unpacks, shelves supplies and stock while maintaining appropriate par levels with rotation sterile supply management principles. Works with the surgical specialty teams to ensure that the supplies for each patient are available when needed. Pro active coordination of preparing the case cart according to the surgeon’s preference card for the supplies, equipment, instruments and implants needed for each patient.

  • Retrieves, counts, disinfects and assembles surgical trays and related supplies. 
    • Utilizes appropriate cleaning processes which may include:
      • Sorting items by type of processes needed
      • Manual washing / cleaning
      • Processing via washer / disinfector
  • Cleans inspects equipment, supplies; follows repair procedures if needed.
  • Inspects for cleanliness and functionality, assemble, prepare for sterilization trays and single items according to identified tray contents.
    • Assemble / sting contents according to tray listing
    • Confirmation of correct instrument/equipment/tray content count
    • Completion of documentation system.
    • If damaged needs repair, follows the established processes
    • Anticipates and prioritizes trays / equipment according to pending surgical needs.
  • Monitors inventory levels within assigned area of responsibility in order to ensure the availability of adequate supplies and equipment.
    • Monitors and ensuring that stored items are not outdated and require resterilization.
  • Responds to requests and responsible for filling requisitions and running stat requests to the requesting area.
  • Responsible for the assembly of procedure specific case carts as needed.
  • Mentors, coaches, and role models service excellence behaviors. Demonstrates commitment to achieving patient and staff satisfaction targets.

  • In conjunction with the leadership team, provides and an environment of safety and patient care that is effective, patient centered, timely efficient, and equitable.
  • Assists leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of policies and procedures that assure professional and clinical excellence and regulatory compliance in the provision of quality care to patients.
  • Participates in gathering and utilization of appropriate data in order to monitor unit operations and with management team makes recommendations for the development of action plans for identified areas of improvement.
  • Assists with the management and implementation of ongoing evaluation processes to assure compliance with regulatory agency standards and an environment of safety.
  • Manages and ensures documented compliance with educational and regulatory compliance measures.


  • Participated in assigned area to create and develop a shared vision and culture consistent with HFHN goals and renewal principles.
  • Supports programmatic ventures to expanded services within assigned areas.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Provides on-going feedback and evaluation of team members and participates in 120-day and annual evaluations at the discretion of the M/UD.
  • Identifies, develops, and completes a plan for personal and professional growth that includes goals, education, increasing responsibility, and exposure to identified learning opportunities as mutually identified by the M/UD.

Research and Education

  • Promotes and facilitates educational opportunities in collaboration with the ES/ CNS and unit educator based on both objective and subjective gap analysis and assessment of staff needs. Assists the M/UD with unit specific roll-outs.
  • Collaborates with the unit ES/CNS and directs the unit educators to plan, implement, and evaluate on-going unit educational programs.
  • Supports on-going research by directing necessary resources, education and facilitation in the assigned area.
  • Completes specific on-going leadership development opportunities both within and outside of the Henry Ford System.


  • Represents Henry Ford Hospital and Department at all appropriate local, state, and national professional meetings.
  • Participates in community activities and/or professional organizations.
  • Represents HFHS by promoting an atmosphere of care, concern, pride and respect to internal and external customers.
  • Maintains awareness of personal actions and activities and the impact on the image of nursing and HFHS


  • Assists management with the development and implementation of operational and capital budgets.
  • Assists the M/UD with investigation, action plan and resolution of budgetary variance reporting.
  • Maintains awareness and responsibility for divisional and global budgets and resource allocations for safe and optimal patient care.
  • Facilitation of cost effective initiatives.


  • High School graduate or equivalent. Completion of medical terminology course is preferred.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients and hospital personnel.
  • Computer skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.

Completion of the 120-day orientation:

  • Successfully completes department and hospital orientation process
  • Competence maintained during evaluation year to include department standards, objectives, in service and continuing education


  • Central Service Certification.
  • BCLS preferred.
