GENERAL SUMMARY: 

Under minimal supervision, performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood and/or other body fluids or specimens, involving manual techniques or the use of laboratory instruments and information systems. Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as needed. Participates in applied research and development projects to introduce new technology and improved methods. 
 
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 
  • Oversees and performs routine and complex chemical, cytologic, hematologic, histologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and/or microbiologic procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and information systems. The Sr. Medical Technologist is qualified to perform all duties of the Sr. Medical Technologist job, and in a given job situation may or may not perform all of the duties; actual duties will pertain to the specific Sr. Medical Technologist position. 
  • Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes and resolve problems.
  • Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as needed.
  • Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release; 
  •  Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states.

Additional job responsibilities are:

  • Procure residual specimens following clinical testing and ship to sponsor to design, develop or validate new or modified IVD  assays and testing systems.
  • Using testing systems placed by sponsor or already resident in lab, validate new assays or modified IVD assays.
  • Recruit and consent subjects for clinical research studies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Completion of accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science. 
  • Three (3) years of experience with progressive responsibility in a clinical laboratory setting. 
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform, teach, and lead laboratory functions. 
  • Vision: Near Acuity: Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less. 
  • Depth Perception: Ability to judge distance and space relationships.
  • Accommodation: Ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus. 
  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify different colors necessary to perform job functions. 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: 
  • Certification at the technologist level from a nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW is preferred.
