GENERAL SUMMARY: 

Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines, perform a variety of activities to ensure the safety and security of patients, visitors, and employees, and deter the loss of property.  As a member of the Safety & Security team, works in coordination with other team members to ensure quality service standards. 
 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Patrols and surveys assigned area within established policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure safety and security of persons and premises. Responds to alarms and emergent calls, investigates unusual occurrences, and incidents, responds to requests from clinical staff to intercept or return patients to assigned areas. 
2. Directs traffic in parking lots to prevent congestion and accidents and ensure clear passage for all emergency vehicles. Secures landing location for helicopters. 
3. Prepares a variety of reports related to the documentation of incidents, Patient valuables, loss of property.   Maintains hospital ‘lost and found” services. 4. Performs preventive safety tours ensuring buildings  and security equipment are in good working order. 
5. Acts as a team member for the Safety & Security work team.  In doing so partners with Plant Operations and Environmental Services departments to ensure facilities and grounds are in good condition and customer service standards are met. 
6. Assists visitors, patients, and HFMH employees by providing directions, escort services, and assistance as needed. Acts as liaison between department and other departments and external organizations. 
7. Performs other clerical tasks such as answering phones, photocopying, relaying messages, and non clerical assignments such receiving and logging bodies in the morgue as assigned. 
8. May assist departments with locksmith services such as making keys and cores and obtaining keys that departments are missing. 
9. Performs other duties as required or assigned. 
10.Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior. 

Payrate: $14.52. This rate is the minimum pay for the position. Actual compensation will be based on years of experience, and other factors at the time of offer.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 
  • Ability to read and write in order to prepare reports and analytical skills in order to investigate situations at a level normally acquired through completion of high school. 
  • Approximately two years related work experience and/or equivalent education necessary in order to fully understand the role of a Security Officer and to obtain knowledge of fire and safety procedures and security surveillance equipment.    
  • Communication skills and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a wide variety of individuals during stressful and/or emergent situations.  
  • Analytical ability necessary to conduct a thorough investigation. 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: 

Must acquire Hospital sponsored CPI Certification (Crisis Prevention Institute) training and the International Association of Hospital Safety & Security, Basic Security Officer Certification within the first 6 months of employment. Current Michigan driver’s license in order to operate a vehicle and ability to use both manual and standard transmissions.  After 90 days of employment, must apply for and receive commercial driver’s license. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS: 
  • Constant movement from location to location as well as frequent (up to 20 percent of work time) ability to drive in order to patrol and monitor assigned area. 
  • Exposure to weather conditions up to 20 percent of work time. 
  • Potential for physical injury when interacting with combative patients or restraining a suspect up to 10 percent of work time. 
  • Ability to lift and move patients and/or transport bodies to the morgue
