Research Scientist/Instruct II - 40 hrs/wk - Days - Detroit
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Individuals in this position must have a high potential for an independent research career. To be promoted into Level 2-research track in pursuit of an independent research career, the scientist must demonstrate previous productivity as a postdoctoral fellow, must have submitted at least one fellowship grant and published at least two first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals or some other combination that points to high productivity. Working in conjunction with a Bioscientific Staff mentor, the scientist in this position will: 1) develop a plan for the submission of external funding within the first year; 2) design and conduct experiments in support of a biomedical research program; 3) develop specific aims as PI for extramurally funded projects and serve as co-investigator on other investigative research projects; 4) achieve project goals of funded research; 5) according to the needs of the mentor, may train and supervise research staff, including research assistants, senior research assistants, research coordinators, postdoctoral fellows, and research fellows; 6) develop and oversee the management of research budgets to ensure successful project completion with available resources and adherence to agency guidelines; and 7) collect and analyze data for the preparation of abstracts for national presentations and manuscripts for publication. By the end of year two (2) in this position, the scientist must be submitting at least one manuscript as first/senior author and one external grant annually. External grants include NIH R and K awards, DOD, ACS, AHA Scientist Development Grants and other small grants from Foundations.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- A professional level of knowledge comparable to that which is acquired through obtaining a Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.D.S., or equivalent degree as judged by the Vice President of Research or the Research Committee.
- Requires a strong working knowledge of various research methodologies including design, measurement, statistics, and the ability to apply knowledge to investigative research.
- Familiarity with computer programming and statistics may be helpful.
- Two (2) years of postdoctoral experience and commitment to independent research career.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience communicating with professional groups.
