Join Henry Ford Health Jackson Inpatient Pharmacy as a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident. 

GENERAL SUMMARY: 

The Pharmacy Resident holds a twelve-month educational position and receives training and experience in advanced clinical pharmacy practice under the supervision of a preceptor. The Resident reports to the Residency Program Director (RPD) and is precepted by the residency preceptors. The Resident works with the preceptor to develop clinical and project management skills on each of the required and elective rotations and provides service to the department on the weekends. The following more fully delineates the responsibilities of this individual. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Rotates through the various areas of the pharmacy department receiving advanced training in the clinical and managerial components of hospital pharmacy services and completes assigned projects. 
  • Assists in the planning, development, implementation, and quality assurance monitoring of new, high quality, cost effective pharmacy programs and services relating to pharmacy practice. 
  • Reviews patient charts and/or interviews the patient, physician, or nurse to obtain information for medication records or profiles. Reviews drug-related information to identify potential problems regarding drug therapy and recommends appropriate solutions to those problems. 
  • Verifies medication orders for completeness and legality. Verifies and checks prepared medications for appropriate dose, route, frequency and duration of therapy. 
  • Provides written and/or verbal drug and poison information to patients, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals. 
  • Provides appropriate recommendations regarding drug therapy to physicians or other health care professionals involved in the patient's care
  • Continuously evaluates and monitors patients' therapeutic responses to prescribed medications as outlined in approved Standards of Practice for Clinical Pharmacy Services. 
  • Participates in in-service, undergraduate and graduate level didactic and practical education. 
  • Must participate in the development, data collection, and analysis of clinical pharmacy research. Must present this project at the Annual Great Lakes Pharmacy Residents Conference. 
  • Participates as a member of the Blue Alert Team, when assigned, to prepare and dispense emergency medication and to provide drug information regarding the use of these drugs during the code

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Must have earned a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. PGY2 residents should have completed an ASHP accredited residency or have equivalent practice experience. 
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills which enable him/her to contribute effectively in the dissemination of drug information to all levels of health care personnel in the institution. 
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work with others in developing improved services for patients. 
  • Must have the desire and capabilities needed to identify therapeutic problems and seek to solve these dilemmas in a logical manner. 
  • Must have the desire and skills needed to conduct clinical pharmacy research or quality improvement projects. 

     

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: 

  • Must be eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan. Pharmacist licensure in the State of Michigan must be obtained within 150 days of the date of hire. Failure to obtain licensure within the designated time-frame may result in termination of the Pharmacy Resident position or extension of the program in order to ensure the Pharmacy Resident is licensed for a minimum of 2/3 of the residency year.
