Under the close direction of the Integrated Support Services (ISS) management team, transports patients, charts and equipment safely and efficiently throughout the hospital and or clinic areas.



  • Transports patients safely and efficiently between nursing units, diagnostic areas, clinics, doctors' suites, morgue and other areas of the hospital.

  • Acts as the primary customer service liaison for the hospital during the transport of patients. Communicates customer service related issue to proper nursing or ISS management staff.

  • Transfers patients to and from the bed to wheelchair, stretcher, etc. May be required to move furniture in patient's room and seek assistance from nursing staff in order to successfully transfer the patient.

  • Monitors patient condition during transportation. Notifies nursing personnel if problems become apparent during the transport period.

  • Assist medical/nursing personnel during emergency situations as directed.

  • Ensures transportation equipment is in good working condition. Makes simple repairs to damaged equipment reporting serious problems to Service Response Center for repair.

  • Assigns transportation requests to other transporters while performing dispatcher duties. Dispatcher duties include responding to calls from nursing units, clinics, etc. appropriately, prioritizing jobs as necessary. Dispatcher is also responsible for communicating issues related to efficiency and timeliness of transports to ISS management. May also be requested to page the TERT (transport emergency response team) as necessary. Performs requested clerical duties, which may vary depending upon assigned department:

  • Maintains electronic log of daily activities (logging information onto computer via IVR/phone system such as time of request, dispatched time, patient room and destination etc.)

  • Contacts assigned nursing unit to verify room availability

  • Receives, handles, and transfers telephone calls and messages within the department promptly and courteously.

  • Relays appropriate information to patients, intra-and inter- departmental personnel.

  • Maintains appropriate records (pick up time, priority status, special equipment needs etc) by logging into and out of jobs in VIP software.



  • Performs requested clerical duties, which may vary depending upon assigned department.

  • Uses CRT to perform patient- related duties such as verifying accuracy of patient name and medical record number, scheduled appointment, etc.

  • Clean and sanitize wheelchairs and stretchers during down time.

  • Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental/interdepartmental objectives.

  • Maintain good employee relations.

  • Enhances job-related growth and development through participation in educational programs.

  • In case of fire or other internal disaster, assists in evacuating ambulatory patients and residents to exits.

  • In case of community disaster, assists nursing in making up extra beds and other duties as assigned.

  • Performs other tasks as assigned.


  • High School diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent experience.

  • Type a minimum of 30 WPM. Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft office and its associated application software (Excel, Word). Possess excellent organizational skills, interpersonal and customer relation skills. Must be able to communicate effectively over the telephone.

  • Must maintain confidentiality of patient and unit-care data per HIPPA regulations.

  • After initial training must be able to consistently demonstrate proper lifting techniques.

  • After initial training, must be able to comprehend and utilize technology associated with transport/discharge management software. This includes processing work requests through phone/IVR and alpha paging system.

  • Ability to lift patients up to 200 pounds. Ability to push combined weight of both patient and transport equipment.

  • Works in patient care area environment, which may include exposure to communicable disease, unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, potential exposure to infection and hazardous gases.
