Reporting to the Director of Learning Systems and Resources, the Instructional Design Consultant is responsible for supporting educational initiatives associated with medical residency and fellowship programs. This individual will formulate the design, development, implementation and evaluation of programming for Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) medical trainees. The position supports institutional and residency program accreditation; advocates for medical education, strengthens institutional commitment for sound educational programming and practical application.



Leadership and Administration:

  • Fully participates in the design, delivery, facilitation, coordination, review and assessment of educational materials and activities that support medical education programming for HFH residency and fellowship programs. Participates in programming and research associated with the HFHS Center for Simulation, Education and Research.

  • Designs/redesigns institution-wide learning events (including, but not limited to Institutional Curriculum and its expansion).

  • Manages complex projects to improve educational practice, quality of care and patient safety.

  • Designs and implements resident and fellow evaluation methodologies; analyses data. Promotes the integration of patient satisfaction and resident/fellow wellness and engagement factors in program and educational activities; supports service excellence principles and leadership behaviors.

  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based practice in program development and evaluation.

  • Conducts educational research and disseminates findings; mentors residents/ fellows in conducting educational research; supports resident research and scholarly activities. Participates in IRB/CME processes associated with research and scholarly activities.

  • Develops, acquires and shares resources related to medical education.

  • Represents HFH residency/fellowship programs through presentations and active participation in appropriate professional associations.

  • Participates in Medical Education Committees.

  • Helps develop and facilitate collaborative educational partners.



  • Supports compliance with accreditation requirements.

  • Responds to information requests.

  • Formulates plans; meets deadlines.



  • Develops and implements initiatives that support strategic direction for ACGME-focused programming to align and integrate medical education within the System.

  • Identifies educational programming to improve the educational enterprise and enhance the learning environment/climate.


    Customer Focus:

  • Establishes and maintains effective collaborative relationships with faculty/staff, residents/fellows and colleagues.

  • Incorporates perspectives and concerns of residents, fellows and faculty relative to the educational enterprise and learning environment in planning.


    Personal Interaction:

  • Regular contact with faculty, program directors, trainees, GME staff, corporate management personnel and other employees.

  • Provides frequent presentations and training programs for trainees and their faculty.




  • Master’s Degree required in education, psychology or other related field. Position well-suited for PhD or PhD candidate.

  • Five (5) years of experience in an educational setting.

  • Demonstrated leadership and expertise in the areas of innovative instructional/program design, program facilitation, communications, wellness, cultural diversity, and evaluation.

  • Experience in healthcare or wellness desirable.
