Leader - Sr Med Lab Scientist - 40 hrs - Days -
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Oversees laboratory operations in multiple technical disciplines on a regular basis with
minimal supervisory interaction. Performs routine and complex analytic procedures on
blood and/or other body fluids using laboratory instruments and information systems.
Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work across multiple technical
disciplines or shifts with consistent quality and corrective and preventive action as
needed. Provides input for performance appraisals and staff development. Frequently
interacts with customers.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides technical and operational leadership across multiple technical
disciplines, locations, and/or workstations with minimal supervisory interaction.
May lead laboratory meetings and represent the laboratory team at meetings.
2. Oversees and performs routine and complex chemical, cytologic, hematologic,
histologic, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic and/or microbiologic
procedures on laboratory specimens, using manual or automated techniques and
information systems. The Leader- Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist is qualified to
perform all duties of the Leader- Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist job, and in a
given job situation may or may not perform all of the duties; actual duties will
pertain to the specific Leader- Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist position.
3. Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action
and/or develop solutions. Collaborates with leadership staff to improve processes
and resolve problems, including:
a) Responsible for establishing and ensuring standard work with consistent
quality and corrective and preventive action as needed.
b) Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure
the accuracy and reliability of all analytic data prior to release;
c) Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states;
d) Identification of technical, instrument, pharmacologic and/or physiologic
causes of unexpected test results.
4. Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of technical
equipment in multiple workstations. Following successful completion of
competency assessment may perform specimen processing, testing, and
reporting without direct supervision. Assists in the correction of technical
problems and serves as a technical resource redirecting the workflow or
assignments as necessary to ensure proper coverage and service standards.
May prepare staffing schedules.
5. Teaches and ensures compliance with established divisional, departmental, and
institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment
and improvement, safety, environmental, and infection control. Maintains
confidentiality of patient information
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Completion of accredited Bachelor’s Degree program in Chemistry, Physics,
Biology, Medical Technology, or Medical/Clinical Laboratory Science.
2. Requires 5 years of experience with progressive responsibility in a clinical laboratory
setting.
3. Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform
laboratory functions are required.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
Certification at the technologist, medical/clinical laboratory scientist level from a
nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, or HEW is
preferred.
