Primarily responsible for the maintenance of dialysis equipment, including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and general care of the machines. Travels to any of the GHS units as needed. May participate in on-call rotation for technical aspects of acute dialysis program.


  • Responsible to the Nurse Manager. Works closely with the Technical Leader, Manager and clinical staff. 
  • Calibrates dialysis equipment such as a dialysis machines, blood pumps etc. 
  • Performs preventative maintenance for all dialysis equipment per schedule. 
  • Trouble-shoots and performs repairs on dialysis equipment as needed. 
  • Practices Standard Precautions to ensure that infection prevention is maximized. Understands and follows isolation procedures. 
  • Prepares bicarbonate solution as needed. 
  • Performs bacteriology cultures, LAL and water analysis as assigned. 
  • Repairs and maintains ancillary equipment and electrical safety checks per schedule. Conducts electrical safety checks on patient equipment brought to unit. 
  • Understands, monitors, and maintains water treatment system. 
  • Performs water cultures and documents as assigned. Notifies appropriate staff of problems. 
  • May be trained to redeploy home hemodialysis machines. 
  • Adheres rigorously to all infection control / infection prevention requirements. 
  • Adheres to confidentiality and HIPAA safety and privacy requirements. 
  • Notifies appropriate charge staff member when leaving work area. 
  • Recognizes and appropriately refers all major problems. 
  • Maintains all logs and reports related to maintenance and repair. 
  • Assists clinical personnel with technical (mechanical) problems that develop during dialysis. 
  • Ensures the biomedical equipment room is neat, safe, clean, and compliant with policy and regulation requirements at all times. 
  • Properly labels status of machine including sterilization. 
  • Responsible for inventory of dialysis equipment and parts. 
  • In-services staff about new equipment, operational and safety procedures pertaining to the dialysis machines, and other developments in the technical field. 
  • Participates in educational programs, research projects and equipment evaluation. Can initiate and follow approved protocol. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Associates degree in electronics/biomedical technology, or two years’ equivalent experience, to include military, original equipment manufacturer (OEM), or industry recognized technical training program, required. 

  • Proven mechanical aptitude and analytical skills for understanding electronic circuitry and for trouble-shooting biomedical/electronic equipment. Proven use of basic electronic testing equipment. 

  • Completion of a B.M.E.T. internship is preferred.
