Employee Safety Specialist | Detroit Hospital Main Campus | Full Time
DESCRIPTION:
The Employee Safety Specialist position is responsible for managing, implementing and administering standardized ES processes to ensure safety and health compliance to federal, state, and local regulations as well as Corporate Policies and Procedures in the healthcare setting. The Employee Safety Specialist is expected to contribute to the achievement of world class status through managing the elimination of occupational injuries/illnesses. This position will specifically focus on improving and safeguarding the health and safety of all employees, ensuring compliance, supporting World Class Safety Management System.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ability to facilitate and coordinate the design and implementation of employee safety initiatives, programs, and projects at the site level; provide project management support to clinical improvement initiatives.
- Assess project needs based on evidenced based best practice(s) and/or regulatory standards; Guides the selection of appropriate team members to address project needs; guides and/or develops a work plan including timelines; Demonstrates the ability to develop an effective communication plan; Seeks leadership guidance appropriately to assist with the identification of obstacles/barriers to success
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the science of process improvement and provide formal and informal consultation; Applies various quality improvement processes/tools and ability to initiate, design, and develop process improvement projects and programs based on organizational need.
- Assist in analysis and interpretation of data; Use data to develop programs to drive change
- Provide formal and informal education to members of the business unit on employee safety and process improvement, performance measurement and management, change management and other key subjects critical to the support of employee safety.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making using information technolog
- Actively participate in site Safety Huddles as well as system Employee Safety Forums and provide support and input to problem resolution, understanding of data, and process improvement
- Experience with clinical quality and employee safety principles/initiatives; demonstrated ability to apply concepts
- Ability to adapt, respond and prioritize in a rapidly changing health care environment and ability to successfully manage multiple competing demands
- Experience with new program/initiative development, implementation and evaluation. Ability to act as a change agent, providing direction to others and gaining their support.
- Basic understanding of the research process and statistical analysis
- Strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and staff.
- Strong oral and written communication skills including presentation skills
- Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, email, and internet navigation software.
- Understanding of health care cultures including medical and nursing cultures. Sound decision-making skills and problem-solving skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Nursing, Clinical or an equivalent field required.
- 3- 5 years of Clinical, Safety, Environmental, Engineering or Clinical related experience required.
- Minimum 3-5 years experience applying regulations and standards applicable to occupational safety and health, environmental safety and health, industrial hygiene or clinical in a variety of settings.
- 3-5 years experience using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word applications.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment, and collaborate with multiple campus stakeholders.
- Must be able to conduct audits, inspections and field work which may include climbing, walking, standing, squatting or kneeling in a variety of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
