GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Henry Ford Health Regional Security Director is responsible for the design, planning, establishment, and administrative approach to safeguard and protect division/facilities. This role oversees assigned divisions/facilities operations for security strategies, education/training, and use of force in collaboration with senior leadership and other security leadership to implement strategic goals, policies, and procedures to further ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors to Henry Ford Health. This role is expected to meet the leadership demands for 24-hour operations resolving and responding to incidents.  The Regional Security Director will also be responsible for supporting operational improvement initiatives, management of new and ongoing projects related to security, safety, and emergency preparedness, and delivering high quality information and recommendations to minimize security and safety risks and vulnerabilities

The Regional Security Director will be responsible for developing, documenting, and implementing all aspects of a comprehensive physical security program including physical security technologies, risk assessment and remediation, Regulatory & Accreditation (CMS and TJC), threat management, emergency preparedness, emergency response, life safety, guard force operation, Federal interagency and local law enforcement liaison, visitor management, budget responsibilities, training, drills, etc.) for Henry Ford Health corporate campus as well as all facilities and in all division across Henry Ford Health.

The Regional Security Director, at the regional level, leads day-to-day security operations and works to utilize highly technical and complex solutions to reduce risk and protect assets. This individual is viewed as an authority in physical security and safety. He or she is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with Division CFOs, CIOs, facilities CEOs, and COOs, as well as interacting with solution and staffing vendors.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Champion physical security awareness across all Henry Ford Health facilities, highlighting its role in safeguarding individuals and supporting key initiatives such as patient and staff safety, physician engagement, employee satisfaction, credentialing, and accreditation
  • Assessment of the current situation: Facility risk assessments and driving remediation. Lay out our risk and business drivers (e.g., Risk assessment and risk pain points, workplace violence, compliance requirements, future needs, and opportunities), operational processes (e.g., Threat Management, Assessments – Facility, Emergency Preparedness, Business Continuity, Dispatch, Drills (ASHER, Infant abductions, Peds abductions, BERT, Lockdown, and training).
  • Directs, coordinates, and manages Henry Ford Health complex physical security program including the development of policies, guidelines, communications, awareness, and training for all Henry Ford Health facilities.
  •  Develop and implement security incident response plans and protocols; measure performance and drive continuous improvement of the physical security program.
  • Leads and develops facility/site, market, and division operations, physical security matters, life safety management, and implementation, threat management, emergency preparedness, emergency response, guard force operation, Federal interagency and local law enforcement liaison, vendor management, first responder liaison, budget responsibilities, training, drills, and other activities to ensure the protection of all people, property, and assets.
  •  Prioritization of the strategy: Collaborate with stakeholders and engage governance and company leadership to set priorities, based on risk, resources, and business priorities.
  • Implementation of the strategy: Support the execution of the plan by leading governance, budgeting, communications, and project portfolio planning and oversight. Forges partnerships with all security colleagues and external clients on the security, and safety-related programs that he/she manages including law enforcement agencies.
  • Manage physical security and security technology vendors and relationships.
  • Establishes and communicates a clear vision for the department staff that is focused on quality care, customer services and regulatory compliance and is aligned with organizational objectives. 
  • Plans, develops, and recommends hospital security policies and programs including emergency measures as well as long and short-term goals for the Security Department. Assures goals are integrated with Organizations strategic plan and all department operations, follow, JCAHO, NIAHO and MCOLES standards and other applicable regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Evaluate and counsel shift leadership personnel on their job performance and assesses each according to departmental and HFH standards. Evaluates grievances generated by personnel working under their command. Makes recommendations on how grievances should be handled/resolved. Serves as a resource and go to for critical security measures and ways to lower risk.
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with local business groups, community organizations, Local, State and Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.
  • Develops and/or oversees development and submittal of hospital/ambulatory budgets for Security Police to Administration for approval. Administers capital, operations and manpower budgets according to financial and organizational guidelines. Utilizes financial reports to determine if goals are being met and adjusts operations to support positive budgetary outcomes.
  • Plan, organize, administer, and monitor activities of personnel to ensure work is properly performed as assigned. Evaluate performance, assess/competency and administer corrective action. Demonstrates leadership skills consistent with mission and values of the Organization to select, train, develop, empower, coach, delegate work assignments.
  • Represents department on safety, emergency response, other committees, and quality improvement teams. Prepares and/or causes to be prepared and submits required safety and security reports and statistics. Presents lectures and visual displays concerning security/safety and crime prevention.
  • Assists in planning of new construction or additions by recommending security, fire and safety considerations.
  • Responds and resolves customer complaints with respect to security and safety. Directs and coordinates investigations of serious security incidents. Direct and oversees lost/stolen/damaged property claims investigation and settlement. May be required to appear in court representing Hospital on small claims.
  • Conduct/participate in/lead contract negotiations with Labor Union, interviews, selects, hires, evaluates, and terminates personnel and has to represent Hospital in arbitration hearings.
  • Oversees and/or reviews conduct of employees with respect to arrests and/or abusive physical intervention. Ensures follow-up and appropriate information/direction is provided to user departments representatives, enforces Hospital rules/regulations and laws of the State of Michigan.
  • Responsible for managing system employee identification program and access control.
  • Responsible for fingerprinting and criminal background checks of required healthcare workers.
  • Reports on trends, anomalies, and concerns within security to leadership planning for mitigation.
  • Communicating the strategic direction with management, peers, subordinates, business units, vendors, external partners, and clients.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Seven (7) years of progressively more responsible leadership experience in Security Administration at a large urban hospital or comparative setting, required.

  • Minimum of ten (10) years in security, military, and/or law enforcement preferred.

  • Excellent knowledge of the Health Care Industry.

  • Professional certification preferred (Certified Healthcare Safety Professional: CHSP) (Certified Healthcare Protection Administration: CHPA).

  • Other safety and security certifications a plus.

  • Experience and working knowledge of security electronic systems, i.e., alarms, access control, CCTV.

  • Must have proven analytical skills essential for dealing with investigations, planning and developing programs, policies, projects and problem solving.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills and ability to represent system publicly and consistent with HFH’s mission and values.

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively with employees, physicians, visitors, patients, and families.

  • Ability to develop long range plans based on emerging technologies and business practices in security/parking and law enforcement.

  • Effective management skills including goal setting, delegation, monitoring progress of projects, coaching and evaluation.

  • A commitment to excellence in management techniques and customer satisfaction.

  • Strong working knowledge of the laws of the State of Michigan, Crime Prevention, Safety Programs, Investigative Techniques, and Joint Commission/State Police and other regulatory Agency compliance.

  • Ability to work under stress and handle several crises at the same time.

 

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Security Administration, Business Management or Science, required. 

  • Master’s degree preferred in a related field.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Valid and insurable Michigan Driver’s License

  • Eligible to obtain a concealed weapon permit.

  • Must qualify for and obtain Security Police Agency License

  • Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator
