Clinical Exercise Physiologist - Preventive Cardio-Second Ave - Full Time
General Summary
The Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) is an allied health professional responsible for evaluating acute and chronic responses to exercise in both healthy individuals and patients with chronic or complex medical conditions. The CEP develops and implements individualized exercise prescriptions, supervises clinical exercise programs, and promotes long-term healthy lifestyle behaviors through patient education and behavior change strategies.
The CEP works independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team to administer exercise stress testing, monitor patient safety, and deliver evidence-based exercise interventions across a variety of clinical populations. Services are provided to patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, renal, endocrine, orthopedic, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, neoplastic, immunologic, and hematologic conditions.
This role includes conducting patient assessments, obtaining medical histories, reviewing medications, evaluating symptoms and vital signs, measuring heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, and interpreting electrocardiograms (ECGs) during rest and exercise. The CEP provides continuous patient surveillance, performs point-of-care assessments, and communicates effectively with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient status and care plans.
The CEP serves as a core member of the exercise stress testing laboratory and supports a variety of clinical exercise and rehabilitation programs, including but not limited to:
- Cardiac Rehabilitation
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation
- Supervised Exercise Therapy for Symptomatic Peripheral Artery Disease
- Exercise and Cancer Integrative Therapy Education Programs
- Clinical Weight Management Programs
- Bariatric Care Services
Programs may be delivered in-person and/or through telehealth platforms.
Within these settings, the CEP provides specialized and innovative care to diverse patient populations, including older adults, frail individuals, pediatric patients, and individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Essential Responsibilities
- Conduct exercise assessments and exercise stress testing
- Develop individualized exercise prescriptions and treatment plans
- Monitor physiological responses and patient safety during exercise sessions
- Interpret ECGs and identify abnormal findings or symptoms requiring intervention
- Obtain and document medical histories, medications, symptoms, and vital signs
- Measure and monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and blood glucose levels
- Provide patient education regarding exercise safety, disease management, and healthy lifestyle behaviors
- Apply behavior change strategies to support long-term adherence to exercise and wellness programs
- Communicate patient status and clinical concerns to physicians and interdisciplinary care teams
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the medical record
- Support telehealth and remote patient monitoring services as applicable
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies, emergency procedures, and clinical safety standards
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in exercise science/physiology or related field.
Experience in a clinical exercise setting highly preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for the healthcare provider.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within 1 year of hire.
- American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) certification is strongly preferred.
