GENERAL SUMMARY:
Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) is delivered to the designated autoclave area by Integrated Support Service transport workers. RMW Autoclave Operator is responsible for implementing specific procedures related to the proper, safe handling, effective processing and detailed record keeping of the RMW and the proper operation of the RMW processing equipment. RMW equipment includes scales, powered lifting devices, autoclave and shredder. When the processing equipment is not operational, Autoclave Operator is responsible for the proper handling, separation, and packaging of the RMW and makes it ready for pick-up by transport workers for offsite disposal. Prepares other non-RMW hazardous material for offsite disposal.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- · Responsible for adhering to all patient care services standards.
- · Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, environmental and infection control standards.
- · Responsible for the operations of autoclave unit and for processing selected RMW streams in accordance with regulatory requirements, manufacturer operating procedures and departmental policy and procedure.
- · Properly separates, for onsite processing, sharps for other RMW when the processing equipment is operational. Processes the separated RMW through the autoclave and shredder in strict accordance with training and procedures. When the processing equipment is not operational, all RMW is packaged and labeled for offsite disposal in accordance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
- · Properly separates, packages and labels for pickup by transport workers all pathological waste, blood and body fluids, low level radioactive waste, hazardous drug waste including waste from antineoplastic, cytotoxic and chemotherapeutic agents and drugs, in accordance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements.
- · Maintains accurate records of the type and amount of waste received, processed and shipped through the processing area.
- · Assures that any EPA/DOT classified hazardous waste arriving in the waste management area is reported to the responsible department for proper characterization and disposal arrangements.
- · Separates and packages all established recycle waste streams for shipment as required.
- · Assures all paper work and records associated with operation of autoclave and shredder unit are completed as required and forwarded to the HAZMAT Coordinator or Safety Officer.
- · Completes all routine daily checks of autoclave and shredder including checking pressure gauges, water valve, drains, hinge lubrication, Biological tests and biological Ampoule incubation. Reports all issues immediately to POM via the Service Response Center.
- · Assures all records and shipping manifests associated with the shipment of waste are completed as required and forwarded to the Coordinator and Safety Officer.
- · Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit data per HIPPA regulations.
- · Enhances job-related growth and development through participation in educational programs, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- · Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment by cleaning up spills immediately and otherwise maintaining a neat and orderly work area. Performs a complete cleaning and maintenance the floors, equipment, tools and surrounding work areas each shift.

- · Pickups and processes scope handles
- · Performs all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- One to two (1-2) years related experience required.
CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- By successfully completing the RMW Autoclave Operator training course scheduled by HFH, and demonstrating the acquired knowledge, maintain certification by autoclave/shredder equipment manufacturer to operate the equipment properly.
