ASP Pharmacist Purpose Statement

The antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) pharmacists at Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) are dedicated to improving patient outcomes through optimization of antimicrobial therapy and the education of healthcare providers in appropriate antimicrobial use. They will promote optimal patient safety, outcomes, cost effective care, and minimize resistance through the following specific responsibilities.

Specific Responsibilities:

Prospective audit and feedback comprises a 50 to 70% effort. Audit and feedback activities may target sterile site cultures, C. difficile infection, selected antimicrobials (restricted, targeted and high cost agents according to local utilization/supply, cost, and medication use evaluation data), and multiple drug resistant organisms.

Formulary restriction comprises a 10 to 20% effort. Formulary restriction activities include policy and guideline creation and maintenance, Epic enhancement, creation and review of antimicrobial utilization reports and monthly antimicrobial spend reports. In addition, the ASP pharmacist serves as a voting member on the HFHS Antimicrobial Drug Specialty Subcommittee (AMSC) of the Medication Management Committee.

Education comprises a 10 to 20% effort. The ASP pharmacist is responsible for pharmacy and multidisciplinary staff development and education. The pharmacist will collaborate with all HFHS ASP pharmacists and AMSC to prioritize topics and create educational materials related to best practices in antimicrobial use and policy/guideline implementation. In addition, the pharmacist will serve as preceptor for pharmacy trainees.

Quality Improvement and Research comprises a 10% effort. These activities may include participation in quality improvements related to antimicrobial use evaluation and/or research. Quality improvement work will be disseminated at HFHS Quality Expo, external conferences, and/or through manuscript publication.

Other activities include implementation of the HFHS ASP Strategic Plan, participation in monthly infection control meetings, creation of an annual report for the antimicrobial stewardship program, maintenance of the HFHS antimicrobial stewardship website, and maintenance of clinical decision support programming.





  • Must hold a degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and must complete a residency training program or have equivalent experience in hospital pharmacy practice.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of pharmacist experience or the equivalent training and experience at another institution, preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated the ability to meet and exceed practice standards set for a Level II pharmacist. (Henry Ford Detroit Hospital Only).
  • Must be able to serve as an institutional authority in a given specialty practice area.
  • Must have demonstrable leadership abilities and exhibit teamwork when working with others.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills which enable him/her to contribute effectively in the dissemination of information to all levels of health care personnel in the institution. Should have a proven research/publication record.
  • Must be qualified to work with pharmacy students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Must have a previous work history of reliability, dependability, and willingness to assume additional responsibilities

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan. If eligible, licensure must be obtained within 30 days of hire; failure to obtain licensure will result in termination of the Pharmacy Specialist position.
