Under the direction of the administrative leadership, this position is accountable for leading, managing, and directing the services provided to patients and their families within the behavioral health Departments or units. Assumes 24-hour responsibility for operations related to the clinical services, patient placement and staffing provided within the behavioral health nursing units.
Ensures professional, evidenced based clinical practice, and educational excellence in the provision of quality care to the patients/families. Promotes the development of creative and innovative patient care models and supports a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach to continuous improvement of patient care services.
1. Demonstrates leadership accountability for the employee engagement survey, and service excellence initiatives.
2. Demonstrates commitment to achieving patient and staff satisfaction targets for the units and organization through participation in activities designed to support and promote service excellence and staff engagement.
3. Assumes responsibility for staff retention by focusing on development, unit operations, improving communication, and enhancing feedback to improve the working environment leading to higher retention rates.
4. Develops a highly functioning team and healthy work environment by directing:
a. Recruitment, screening, selection, hiring, and dismissal process of the unit(s) staff.
b. Orientation process of front line leaders and bedside staff.
c. Healthy work environment principles and conflict resolution techniques.
d. Maximizing front line leader and employee participation and accountability for decision making.
e. Facilitating, measuring and implementing strategies to maximize employee and team satisfaction.
f. Focuses on staff development, career enrichment, promoting balance between home and work life.
5. Focus on culture, accountable for BU initiatives and measures for patient and staff satisfaction. Manages continuous feedback, the use of grievance and disciplinary processes, and the formal evaluation process of staff in the areas of responsibility.
6. Effectively communicates and coordinates appropriate activities with the BU and corporate departments as necessary (i.e. Human Resources, QA, Legal, Finance, Payroll.)
7. Builds effective and respectful working relationships with peers and promotes optimal communication and collaboration through regular contact with the medical, administrative, nursing and ancillary staff.

1. Facilitates ongoing development and standardization of services and policies/procedures throughout the region and HF Behavioral Health.
2. Communicates clearly and effectively with direct reports, immediate supervisor, medical staff, the health care team, and interdepartmentally.
3. Demonstrates effective oral communication skills in the following areas: active listening, assertiveness, providing feedback/coaching, mentoring, team building, conflict management, and crucial conversation techniques.
4. Demonstrates effective written communication skills.
5. Maintains current knowledge of grievance and disciplinary procedures. Communicates effectively and maintains competent coaching and counseling skills throughout as well as during employee performance reviews.
6. Assumes 24 hour accountability for the administrative management of designated patient care areas.
7. Develops and organizes committees as necessary. Oversees appropriate committee work plans and timelines while maintaining communication and collaboration with committee chairpersons.
8. Acts as lead in absence of administration.
Quality and Safety
1. Assumes responsibility for accessing and utilizing appropriate data in order to monitor operations and develops action plans for identified areas of improvement.
2. Actively participates in quality improvement processes at the department, BU and System level ensuring appropriate integration throughout.
3. Ensures timely completion of compliance requirements for staff including but not limited to mandatory on-line educational requirements.
4. Manages the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of policies and procedures that assure professional and clinical excellence in the provision of quality care to patients.
5. Manages and implements an ongoing evaluation process to assure compliance with regulatory agency standards and an environment of safety.
6. Acts as a member of a care management team by assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the nursing and patient care processes with patients and families.
7. Develops, implements, and evaluates goals for each patient care service which support department, hospital and System goals.
8. Facilitates, coaches, and empowers staff in the continuous improvement of patient care services within each patient care area/service.
9. Manages and ensures documented compliance with educational and regulatory compliance measures.
10. Manages, investigates and implements strategies for resolution of documented quality and safety issues.
11. Coordination of patient care through modeling - respectful, thorough communication to patients, families, and physicians.
1. Supports growth through unit, BU and System initiatives.
2. Maintains active membership and participation in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels as appropriate.
3. Utilizes stakeholders in assigned area to create and develop a shared vision and culture consistent with HFMG and HFHS goals and renewal principles.
4. Mentors and facilitates assigned staffs professional and career goals.
5. Actively supports the recruitment of new staff in collaboration with Human Resources.
6. Supports programmatic ventures to expand services within assigned areas.
Research and Education
1. Facilitates professional development and clinical growth through implementation and maintenance of unit specific competencies.
2. Promotes and facilitates educational opportunities based on an assessment of staff needs in collaboration with the CNS, Unit Educator or other experts as appropriate.
3. Collaborates with Education Specialist/ CNS, Unit Educator, and others to ensure unit based education goals and plans are developed, implemented, and evaluated as well as ongoing unit educational needs.
4. Maintains core competences to perform staff functions.
5. Supports process improvement by directing necessary resources, education, and facilitation in the assigned area.
6. Promotes learning opportunities that are evidenced based.
1. Represents HF Behavioral Health and department at all appropriate local, state, and national professional meetings.
2. Participates in community activities and professional organizations aligned with strategies.
3. Represents HF Behavioral Health by ensuring an atmosphere of care, concern, pride and respect to internal and external customers.
4. Maintains awareness of personal actions and activities and the impact on the image of nursing throughout HFHS.
1. Develops and implements operational and capital budget in alignment with strategies and in collaboration with the Clinical Managers and behavioral health administration.
2. Manages and assures that finance goals are consistent with budgeted projections. Explains unforeseen variances.
3. Maintains awareness and responsibility for budgets and resource allocations to ensure safe and optimal patient care. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or completion of other formal nursing education necessary to obtain/maintain an advanced practice nursing Ml license (mid-wife, CRNA, CNS, or Nurse Practitioner).
  • Masters degree in Nursing, Business Management or other related field.
  • Five (5) years of clinical experience as an RN.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of progressive clinical leadership experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong facilitative interpersonal skills. Excellent problem solving skills. Demonstrated innovative, creative leadership style. Participative management style.
  • Knowledge of quality safety imperatives, process improvement, and service excellence.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively lead assigned personnel and to communicate with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate procedures, techniques, assess problems, and identify solutions.



  • An ideal candidate will have 5 or more years of Director level or beyond clinical leadership experience in a psychiatric hospital setting.
Current license to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
