Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the unit assistant provides clerical support for Patient Care Units(s) including admission, discharge, transfer, medical records, receptionist and quality control. Under the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse, performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situation according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. The Unit Clerk follows the Henry Ford Health System Team Member Standards of Excellence in all interactions.



The Unit Assistant is responsible for many tasks and responsibilities that are detailed in the attached task list. The top priorities for all Unit Assistants are:

·         Customer Service

·         Answer phones and facilitate communication between the nursing unit and callers

·         Respond to call lights

·         Clerical processing of new admissions including creating patient charts, other duties define by unit (i.e. MyChart enrollment)

·         Scheduling of post-discharge appointment with patient following the established business unit process.

·         During downtime, process and back-enter non-medication orders placed during downtime.

o   Maintain downtime paper forms

·         Perform monthly maintenance of BCA, printer and unit report.

·         Notify appropriate resources for maintenance, track all requests and statuses for unit clinical, telecommunication (phone system) and computer equipment.

·         Contacts consultative services per business unit process.

·         Process patient information after discharge, including disposition in electronic health record (EHR) and breakdown of patient chart.

·         Assist with coordination of interpreter services after collaboration with nursing staff.

·         Performs cleaning of unit clinical, telecommunication (phone system) and computer equipment during each shift. Re-boots computer equipment if needed.

·         Performs tasks related to emergency response activities.

·         Performs purposeful rounding according to unit standards



·         Maintains effective, professional, and appropriate communication during all interactions including patient, family encounters and health care team members.

·         Identifies concerns related to patients, staff, and self, and communicates with the responsible RN (i.e. patient complaints, physician inquiries, staffing issues, assignment problems).

·         Actively participates in the shared governance process to promote nursing and team practice.

·         Maintains commitment to peers evidenced by healthy communication principles and positive problem solving.



·         As directed, assists the RN in admitting, transferring and discharging of patients.

·         Demonstrates sensitivity to patients’ comfort and privacy and engaged in patients’ care. Answers patient questions, and explains procedures when performing.

·         Provides personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, mobility, comfort and transportation.

·         Provides therapeutic patient care under the supervision and/or direction of the RN.

·         Routine rounding on patients assigned when not directly engaged in patient care tasks. Purposeful rounding according to unit standards.

·         Maintains safe and clean patient room environment.

§ Keeps room free from clutter

§ Cleans bedside tables

§ Maintains room free from excess supplies and linen.

§ Maintains cleanliness of other assigned areas.

·         Makes necessary supply deliveries to patient rooms and ancillary departments.

·         Performs other related duties as required within scope of practice.

·         Must practice the customer service Standards of Excellence.


Quality and Safety

·         Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

·         Maintains a clean, safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with HFHS standards.

·         Recognizes and responds to emergencies and alarms and immediately communicates situation to appropriate persons.

·         Maintains confidentiality of patient and unit care data.

·         Performs general clerical duties as assigned.

·         Ensures an adequate stock of patient care supplies, proper functioning maintenance and cleaning of equipment.

·         Documents patient care provided.

·         Provides 1:1 patient care for patient safety as assigned.


·         High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

·         Work experience as a nurse assistant preferred or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) preferred or are currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing.

·         Successful completion of introductory period required to achieve knowledge of policies relative to job duties and patient care unit.

·         Visual/hearing/verbal ability required to receive calls, record information.



·         Complete BLS Heartsaver Certification during orientation.




Pay Grade- G 15  $12.79 This rate is the minimum pay for the position.  Actual compensation will be based on education, years of experience, and other factors at the time of offer.
