Under the general direction of the division head of medical physics, chairman of radiation oncology, director of clinical physics, section manager, and administrator: leads the production support, enhancement, and maintenance of radiation oncology IT/IS. Performs design of computational frameworks to help facilitate efficiency of clinical treatment processes and procedures in radiation oncology, e.g. image-guided adaptive radiotherapy. Codes and documents developed scripts and processes/procedures. Designs and implements patient data and analysis methods, to elicit trends and develop approaches to improve efficiency of current clinical processes. Works closely with the radiation oncology IT/IS team members to develop code for management of the radiation oncology data mining, and process improvement databases, and alpha/beta software verification and testing methods for software being developed in Radiation Oncology. Works closely with the radiation oncology IT/IS team members to develop code/scripts to enable integration between the Radiation Oncology (ARIA/Eclipse) and EPIC databases. Works together with the radiation oncology IT/IS and corporate IT/IS to provide and support all IT/IS needs for the radiation oncology department. 

The responsibilities also include troubleshooting application issues and/or data issues when they arise. The Senior Radiation Oncology Programmer is a key member in an IT/IS team that is accountable for production support (including on-call duties in a 24x7 environment) as well as new projects. 

The ideal candidate will have experience using analytical skills to seek out, research and evaluate a variety of options to provide clients with high quality, efficient business processes and solutions that promote efficiency and enterprise-wide standardization. 


Including software upgrades, PC- and peripheral specific issues, clinical (ARIA/Eclipse) database issues, 

  • Participates in requirements definition sessions to gain perspective on the IT/IS objective(s) or problems to be addressed by the radiation oncology department. 

  • Works with the lead medical physicists and radiation oncologist to gain an understanding of functional requirements. 

  • Works with lead medical physicists and other appropriate IT/IS members to develop implementable technical designs. Research and recommend alternative design solutions where appropriate.

  • Analyzes requirements, design, write code and develop prototype, and work with the radiation oncology end-users to fine tune the software prototype, as well as make improvements to improve usability, based on end-user feedback. 

  • Participates in peer/code/design reviews to verify that quality standards and functional/technical requirements are met. 

  • Design, code, test and implement complex software programs; Develops appropriate programs and systems documentation according to established IT/IS standards. 

  • Creates test scenarios and develops test plans to be used in testing of the developed software/framework in order to verify that client requirements are incorporated in to the system design. 

  • Assists in analyzing testing results throughout the project. 

  • Enhances existing systems; participates in structured reviews of the current radiation oncology systems, in order to improve usability, convenience of use, efficiency and accuracy. 

  • Supports production systems by helping resolve problems, providing timely follow-up on problem report, optimizing performance and streamlining processes, 

  • Assists in coordinating developments tasks on projects, problem tickets and provide support to other team members. 

  • Participates in technical reviews and inspections to verify 'intent of change' is carried out through the entire project. 

  • Provides support, escalation response to production problem issues/errors. Performs root cause analysis and application resolution. 

  • Provides on call second-level escalation response for client issues and application problem tickets for all radiation oncology treatment sites across the system. 

  • Collaborates with work radiation oncology team members, key medical physicists and radiation oncologists, radiation oncology leaders, staff, radiation oncology IT/IS team members, and technology vendors to define needs and facilitate solutions. 

  • Collaborates closely with radiation oncology IT/IS team members and corporate IT to ensure IT/IS needs in radiation oncology are constantly met. 

  • Works with the radiation oncology IT/IS team and other appropriate team members to provide support of the ARIA/Eclipse and EPIC databases, and integration of these databases. 

  • Works with the radiation oncology IT/IS team and other appropriate team members to provide support of the radiation oncology data mining, and process improvement databases. 

  • Ensures proper documentation and on-time delivery of all technical artifacts and deliverables. 

  • Keeps abreast of new Tools & Technology and functionalities across the radiation oncology application. 

  • Promotes teamwork and leads by example. 

  • Initiates a personal training plan, continue acquiring skills and knowledge, and pursue an understanding of the radiation oncology departmental technology and related IT/IS needs.


  • PhD degree in computational sciences. 

  • Five (5) years of applicable work experience post PhD; experience in a Healthcare specific to Radiation Oncology. 

  • Experience with radiation oncology treatment planning databases. 

  • Experience with the Varian Medical Systems, ARIA/Eclipse database, and the Advanced Planning Interface (API) for script development. TITLE: Senior Radiation Oncology Programmer F01552 Page: 3 of 3 

  • Experience with hospital information systems, such as EPIC, preferred. 

  • Deep expertise with Microsoft Windows Server, SQL Server, SharePoint, .Net, technologies. 

  • Deep expertise with a variety of programming languages, C-sharp, C++, Java, Matlab, Python, and other current coding systems need to develop software in radiation oncology. 

  • Experience with Windows and other current operating systems. 

  • Good understanding of HIPAA data Privacy and Security requirements. 

  • Ability to be flexible and work analytically in a problem-solving environment. 

  • Good organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills. 

  • Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to analyze data and publish results. 

  • Proven ability to work independently and as a team member
