Job Description Summary 

The Alliance Attending Physician is responsible for providing high quality patient care to inpatients and outpatients as assigned. This position will rotate.  Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the global leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation for adults and children with the most severe, complex conditions. In addition to operating a 262-bed flagship hospital in downtown Chicago and wholly owned DayRehab and outpatient clinics across Chicagoland, the organization extends its reach and expands patient access to comprehensive rehabilitation services through its Global Network of alliance hospitals. 
 
Since 2023, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has brought its expertise to Detroit through a partnership with Henry Ford Health. Currently, the organization provides management of inpatient rehabilitation and medical-surgical therapy at various Henry Ford Health community hospitals. Upon opening in 2029, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab will occupy the top three floors of Henry Ford Health’s patient tower — a 72-bed, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility. This position will practice at our HFH partnership.

  • Assumes responsibility for patients’ clinical quality, safety, outcomes, and satisfaction. 

  • Maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

  • Actively participates in assigned organizational and Medical Committee work. 

 

MARKETING: 

  • Participates in marketing efforts and developing and maintaining referral sources. 

 
SCIENCE, ACADEMICS, AND RESEARCH: 

  • Advocates a scientific approach to patient care delivery. 

  • Advances the academic mission of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab by providing an environment of lifelong learning for staff and maintaining strong relationships with academic initiatives at professional organizations. The Attending may also pursue scholarly activity through scientific presentations and publications. 

  • Participates in research and medical education activities, including teaching medical students and residents, Grand Rounds, continuing education programs and in-service training programs. 

  • Assists in Fellowships training as appropriate. 

  • Cultivates a collaborative and professional work environment that stimulates inquiry, the scientific method and continuous improvement. 

 
PRACTICING PHYSICIAN: 

  • Ensures evidenced-based scientific approach to patient care delivery and collaborates with clinicians and scientists in pediatric rehabilitation clinical research. 

  • Participates in rehabilitation research when opportunities arise. 

  • Collaborates with leaders and staff in other Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Programs to facilitate achieving overall organizational goals. 

  • Serves as a practicing physician and provides medical leadership to the interdisciplinary team. 

  • Ensures appropriateness and effectiveness of treatment plan; oversees and coordinates the involvement of physicians, nursing and allied health staff to resolve complex medical problems. 

  • Participates in assigned medical staff committees, chairing as appropriate.  

  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interests of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. 

  • Reports directly to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Vice President, Chief Medical Affairs (Henry Ford Health).

  • Licensed to practice medicine in Michigan. 

  • Successful completion of a residency program with Board Certification or Board Eligible in physical medicine and rehabilitation. 

  • Prescriptive authority and DEA licensure. 

  • Excellent communications and interdisciplinary skills required, including proven ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, referring parties, and other internal and external stakeholders.
