Administrative accountability for leading, managing, developing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of patient care. Manages and collaborates relationships with leadership members, physicians, for the care of responsible patient populations. Assures professional, clinical, and educational excellence in the provision of quality care to patients. Facilitates empowerment of staff in the implementation of creative and innovative patient care delivery models and stimulates a collaborative multidisciplinary team approach in the continuous improvement of patient care services. In conjunction with the Unit Medical Director, assumes responsibility for fiscal management of the unit.



1. Develops a high functioning team and healthy work environment by directing:

a. Recruitment, screening, selection, hiring, and dismissal process of the unit staff.

b. Orientation process of front line leaders and bedside staff in conjunction with the CNS.

c. Healthy work environment principles and conflict resolution techniques.

d. Maximizing front line leader and employee participation and accountability for decision making.

e. Facilitating, measuring and implementing strategies to maximize employee and team satisfaction.

f. Focuses on staff development, career enrichment, promoting balance between home and work life.

g. Accountable to hospital initiatives and measures for patient and staff satisfaction.

2 Manages continuous feedback, the use of grievance and disciplinary processes, and the formal evaluation process of staff in the areas of responsibility.


1. Assumes 24 hour responsibility for the administrative management of designated patient care areas.

2. Cast a positive shadow by representing the assigned areas at all departmental, interdepartmental, institutional, and external meetings as appropriate.

3. Develops and organizes committees as necessary. Oversees all committee activities and maintains communication and collaboration with all committee chairpersons.

4. Coordinates with the patient care team to maximize patient satisfaction.

Quality and Safety

1. Manages the development, implementation, evaluation, and improvement of policies and procedures that assure professional and clinical excellence in the provision of quality care to patients.

2. Assumes responsibility for accessing and utilizing appropriate data in order to monitor unit operations and develops action plans for identified areas of improvement.


  •  Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or completion of other formal nursing education necessary to obtain/maintain an advanced practice nursing Michigan license (mid-wife, CRNA, CNS, or Nurse Practitioner is required.
  •  Masters Degree in Nursing, Business, Health Management or other related field preferred.
  •  Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an acute care setting with progressive nursing leadership responsibilities.
  •  Knowledge of quality management and service excellence.
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  •  Strong interpersonal skills that provides coaching and facilitation expertise.
  •  Excellent problem solving skills.
  •  Demonstrates innovative, creative leadership style.



  • Current license to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
  • BCLS/ACLS certification required per unit standards.
