GENERAL SUMMARY:


The Cardiac Catheterization Tech (CCT) works as a member of the Cardiovascular Lab (CCL) team of medical professionals. Under the direct supervision, the CCT is responsible for assisting physicians during diagnostic and interventional procedures by performing Scrub or Monitor functions. The technologist is responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the CCL. The CCT is responsible for patient safety in the CCL and must be able to recognize cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to emergency protocols, operate external cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • According to established procedures, prepares patients for cardiac catheterizations or electrophysiology test(s) by calculating and selecting proper technical factors and equipment and operating equipment for optimal results.  
  • Is responsible for assisting physicians during diagnostic & interventional procedures by performing Scrub and monitor functions.
  • Ensures files and records are properly completed in accordance with established guidelines and procedures.
  • Performs a variety of related clerical duties to enhance the efficient operations of the office/department. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures same is properly supplied for Cath Lab procedures.
  • Assists physicians and/or performs other related procedures as requested.  Responsible for operation and maintenance of equipment and supplies in the CCL. Responsible for patient safety in the CCL and must be able to recognize cardiac arrhythmias and respond according to emergency protocols, operate external cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator.
  • Must be willing to rotate through the following roles: Scrub; performs surgical prep and draping of the patient, assists the physicians with equipment operation and devise preparation. Equipment includes needles, wires, catheters and medications. Assists in adhering to aseptic sterile technique. Monitor; monitors vital signs, during the procedure. Documents the procedure and create a medical record. Records intra-cardiac/arterial pressures and waveforms. Is responsible for interdepartmental communications.
  • Performs Point of Care and WAVE testing requirements as needed per hospital policy.

 



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:  

  • Knowledge of hemodynamic principles as well as operation and maintenance of imaging equipment as normally acquired through completion of two years post high school training in a School of Cardiovascular Invasive Technology or Radiation Technology.
  • Must be registry eligible. Certification of RCIS is desired. RT Certification is acceptable or RCES certification.  
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate or successful completion of BCLS class and attainment of BCL certificate within three (3) months of employment.  
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certificate or successful completion of ACLS class and attainment of certificate within six (6) months of employment.  
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary in order to develop and maintain a wide variety of cooperative working relationships and convey information clearly and consistently through verbal and written medium.
  • Analytical ability necessary in order to determine best method of providing requested test based on the specifics of each individual case.
