Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, and in accordance with established policies, procedures, guidelines, and patient care plans, performs a variety of direct patient care activities for patients with addiction, behavioral problems or for mentally ill and imbalanced patients. Provides positive interactions and safe environment to maximize patient wellbeing. Notifies manager of any significant patient care issues.


1. As part of an interdisciplinary care team consisting of Physician, RN, Social Worker, Activity Therapist, etc., assist in administering established care plans, behavioral objective and treatment goals.
2. Obtain and record patient vital signs and notes levels of mental alertness and functioning. Vitals include blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood glucose monitoring. May perform EKG, blood draws, and process urine specimen.
3. When assigned, performs Safety Rounds on patients according to standard operating procedures to ensure a safe milieu for patients and staff and to mitigate risk of harm. Document location and behavior in real time using electronic device.
4. Support a therapeutic environment for patients by encouraging them to participate in therapeutic activities such as group meetings and structured activities and promotes a sense of community and individual responsibility.
5. Maintain safety on the unit by monitoring the patient's behavior and intervening when behavior becomes inappropriate. Report safety defects or potential issues to nurse manager.
6. Attend interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss and evaluate patient's progress. Assist in assessment of patients by providing significant information and observations regarding patient and/or treatment.
7. Orient new patients to the hospital and unit procedures. Under the direction of RN, complete the patient admission process by searching belongings, recording and storing valuables.
8. As needed, helps patients with personal hygiene activities, bathing, grooming, toileting and getting dressed.
9. Respond to crisis situations by being involved in crisis resolution and management, possibly employing the use of physical restraints or other coping techniques.
10. Place patients in seclusion who are potentially dangerous to others, checking on patients at specific intervals; check on suicidal patients at specific intervals; report on situations and document results. May perform Close Visual Observation of patient.

11. May be asked to escort patients to off-site activities, i.e. court or appointment with specialists or trips to medical facility.
12. Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Integrity/ Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, Patient Safety as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
13. Orient new team members by creating a welcoming environment, introducing them to staff, teaching standard operating procedures, etc.
14. Perform other related duties as required


• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Minimum of one-year college experience in Behavioral Health, Allied Health, Psychology or related field.
• If no college experience, must have at least one year of Behavioral Health Technician experience.
• Two or more years of experience as a Behavioral Health Technician in an inpatient psychiatric or addiction medicine setting preferred (depending on location hired).
• Ability to physically manage patients when necessary in a safe and therapeutic manner.
• Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients providing comfort, empathy, encouragement, and support.
• Analytical skills necessary to assess patients and gather data relevant to patient care.
• Ability to work in cooperation with other health care providers to provide quality, safe care to patients.


• Complete BLS Heartsaver Certification during orientation. Maintain active BLS certification.
• Must complete Non-Abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention (NAPPI) training within first three months of becoming a Behavioral Health Technician (location specific). Maintain active NAPPI certification.
