Ethicist
ONSITE AT DETROIT
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under direction of the Chief Medical Officer of Henry Ford Hospital, the Ethicist is
responsible for leading and maintaining an effective hospital ethics program, working
with the Ethics Committee, and managing the Ethics Consultation Service. Serves as
a role model for interdisciplinary, collaborative care improvement and delivery.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Will function in a clinical role performing and overseeing ethics consultations for
Henry Ford Hospital.
2. Serves as a member of the Ethics Committee and provides guidance related to the
membership, standards, and practices of an effective and high-quality Ethics
Committee; provides training for continuing and new Ethics Committee members.
3. Directs the Ethics Consultation Service and works with a small group of Ethics
Committee members to do timely and high-quality ethics consults as needed or
requested.
4. Develops and provides regular ethics education programs for clinicians, staff, and
others.
5. Responsible for the review and update of existing ethics-related policies and
provides leadership in the development of new policies as needed. Ensures
compliance with all regulatory requirements.
6. Serves on relevant committees such as quality, safety, and patient experience.
7. Engages in and supports ethics research and scholarship.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with area of specialization in bioethics, or Doctor of
Jurisprudence (JD), or a Doctor of Medicine with additional advanced graduate level
program, fellowship in Bioethics/Clinical Ethics or equivalent, and board certified in
Healthcare Ethics Consultation (HEC-C).
• Advanced knowledge and extensive experience in:
o Clinical ethics consultation (preferably over a period of at least 5 years).
o Working with hospital Ethics Committees.
o Providing clinical ethics education to clinicians and others, in both formal and
informal settings.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:
- Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification (HEC-C) from American Society of
Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH).
